On Wednesday, 1 February, 2006, the inaugural meeting of a group interested in gemstones and associated activities was held at the VVF at Warradale. The meeting was well attended by 12 people with apologies from 9 others. Areas of interest included fossicking, faceting, cabochon, gold, and manufacturing jewellery. Names for the group were thrown around and Gemvets (by Laurie) was agreed to by all. Marg Rogers suggested the girls were the gems and the blokes were the vets. Darryl Alldridge brought in books, gems, equipment and faceted stones for people to look over and put on an interesting display of faceting on his machine. It has been decided to hold monthly meetings on the 1st Thursday of the month at 12.30pm (if the VOR runs over time, then our meeting will start a bit later). The first scheduled meeting on Thursday, 2 March was not well attended as large numbers of our group were committed to VOR and fishing trips. Now we are up and running, hopefully no further double bookings will occur. Items of interest discussed at this 2nd meeting were the need to house our equipment and possible fossicking trips such as Gold near Tippaburra (more information required on this one), Mortlake Quarry in Victoria for Peridot, and possible Peridot near Iron Knob (Garry Evans to check on this). Possible equipment workshops, i.e. making your own tumbler etc, were also discussed. Thanking all for their support and encouragement. Farmer (Peter Rogers) E-mail: PS. Don’t forget to mark your diary/calendar with our next meeting on Thursday, 6 April, 2006 at 12.30pm.
